WVTK Local & State News – December 5, 2017

Governor Phil Scott today announced he’s appointed 42 Vermonters to State boards and commissions in the month of November. Boards and commissions serve an important role in state government, giving Vermonters numerous opportunities to serve their state and communities. The governor’s office is currently soliciting applications to fill vacancies and upcoming term expirations.


Karen M Scolforo, EdD, officially began her tenure as President of Castleton University on yesterday.  Dr Scolforo is the fourth woman to lead the University since its founding in 1787, and the tenth president of the modern era.  She joins the Castleton family after spending four years as president at Central Penn College located in Summerdale and Lancaster, Pennsylvania.


Buss Drivers and Paraeducators with the Rutland Northeast Education Association avoided a planned strike for today.  Unions officials accepted a tentative contract offer that negotiators for both sides reached on Saturday afternoon.  The bus drivers and paraprofessionals voted last Thursday to go on strike today if a contract settlement wasn’t reached.  This afternoon the school boards in the Otter Valley Unified Union School District and the Barstow Unified Union District are voting on the settlement.  


Due to budget concerns, it looks like the Bubble or Dome, which was a gift Castleton University from Middlebury College, will not be built.  The 320-foot inflated facility was to supposed to be erected next to Spartans Arena.  Athletic Director Deanna Tyson confirmed that the former President, David Wolk told the faculty at a recent meeting that the structure will not be built and used due to budget concerns.  


A major fundraising effort is about to get underway for the Memorial Sports Complex in Middlebury.  The funds will be used for the completion of upgrades to the second floor.  Officials are looking to raise $350,000.  That money will be used for a number of upgrades including creating a heated viewing area, elevator access and public restrooms for the top floor of the sports center.  For more details on the project and to donate, visit MemorialSportsCenter.org.
