WVTK Local & State News – February 12, 2018

The Bristol Selectboard is hosting a special meeting this evening.  The topic of tonight’s special meeting is expanding natural gas service to Bristol.  The Bristol Selectboard is considering a memorandum of understanding between the town and Vermont Gas regarding their proposed construction of a gas distribution facility in Bristol.  Officials from Vermont Gas will be on hand to present plans and answer any questions you may have.  During the meeting, there will be a discussion on how to move forward.  Tonight’s meeting is at Holley Hall, starting at 6 o’clock.  


Fort Ticonderoga will be awash in chocolate this summer.  Mars Wrigley Confectionery recently awarded Fort Ticonderoga a Forrest E. Mars Jr. Chocolate History Grant for a project entitled “A Sea of Chocolate: Cocoa Cargoes in the Anglo Atlantic.”  The fort will use the grant to research and develop a new program highlighting chocolate consumption and distribution by the British Royal Navy on Lake Champlain.  Forrest E. Mars Jr. was the billionaire scion of the reclusive family that produced the Milky Way candy bar and M&Ms, and who helped build Mars Inc. into the world’s largest confectionery company.


Voters in Bristol on Town Meeting Day will be asked to approve a slight increase in taxes.  The proposed budget for the 2019 Fiscal Year calls for a 1.5-percent increase in spending.  Which comes out to a 2.7-percent increase in the municipal tax rate.  Bristol residents will vote on town spending at the annual meeting, slated for Monday, March 5, at Holley Hall beginning at 7 pm.


The New York Governor’s Office announced a 30-day budget amendment to fund early voting across the state.  The amendment will allow every county in the state to offer early voting in the 12 days leading up to Election Day.  Voters will have at least eight hours on weekdays and five hours on weekends to cast early ballots.  Under current law, New York is one of 13 states where early voting is not available.


The warnings for Town Meeting Day and the Addison Central School District Annual Meeting are now available on the Town of Middlebury Website.  The Middlebury Town Meeting will take place on Monday, March 5th at the Mary Hogan School starting at 7 pm.  Voting by Australian Ballot will take place the next day, Tuesday, March 6th from 7 am to 7 pm.  The Annual ACSD Meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 27th, at 7 pm at MUHS.  During the meeting, issues pertaining to the schools within the district will be discussed.  Voting by Australian Ballot on School issues will also take place on Tuesday, March 6th, from 7 am to 7 pm.
