WVTK Local & State News – March 12, 2018

School security is being examined all across Vermont in the wake of last month’s deadly shooting in Florida and a foiled school shooting in Fair Haven.  Governor Phil Scott has ordered mandatory ‘school safety site assessments’. It’s an effort to ensure a comprehensive approach to reducing the risk of school violence statewide.  The assessments will gather the most recent data on current school emergency preparedness planning, training, policies, security systems and school safety practices that are being used in Vermont schools.

The Vermont state House is making the final decisions on proposed budget cuts.  The House Appropriations Committee is expected to take up the budget proposed by Governor Phil Scott this week.  However, the committee has restored numerous items cut by the governor temporarily until lawmakers can review the list of items facing partial and full cuts.  Once the House approves their version, the Budget will go to the Senate for further action.

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is looking for interested volunteers to serve as department ambassadors and greet visitors at the new Dead Creek Visitor Center in Addison.  Training sessions will take place in late April. The Dead Creek Visitor Center opened in September 2017 and has been operating under limited hours this winter. Officials hope that with more staff, the center can broaden the hours of operation and opportunities for the public to visit the center.  Officials say you don’t have to be an expert, just have an enthusiasm for sharing information with visitors.
