ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – New protections in New York for providers prescribing abortion medication.
Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that lets abortion medication providers request pharmacies use the name of their practice instead of their personal name on prescription labels.
She said there have been state and federal attacks on reproductive rights, but New York will be a safe haven for people looking for reproductive health care.
This move helps protect doctors providing abortion drugs so they don’t face legal repercussions.
“Trying to have another level of protection for these doctors who are out there on the front lines, doing what they know is right, what they were trained to do. We must be there to support them. We must be their allies. We must be their army to protect them,” said Gov. Hochul.
Hochul highlighted a New York doctor now facing a $50,000 fine and up to 5 years in prison for providing abortion drugs to someone in Louisiana.
Hochul promised to do everything to protect the doctor from the Louisiana indictment.
