DESCRIPTION:The Mittelman Observatory\, which was just re-named by Middlebury College in memory of David Mittelman ’76\, will host free open house nights on the 7th floor of McCardell Bicentennial Hall on July 19 and 26\, and August 2\, from 9 to 10:30 pm. \nThe Observatory consists of a powerful 24-inch reflecting telescope in the dome and a number of smaller telescopes on the roof. \nOpen house nights are always free and open to the public\, but they take place only when the sky is expected to be mostly clear. Check the Observatory or call the Observatory at (802) 443-2266 after 7 p.m. on the evening of the event for a weather update. \n\n\n\n \n

DESCRIPTION:We are now 1 week into the three project to install temporary bridges in downtown Middlebury.  Main Street\, which has been under construction since July 20\, will reopen in 8 days\, on Saturday\, August 5.  Printer’s Alley is now open to pedestrians\, reconnecting Main Street to the Marble Works.  A new pedestrian bridge is open\, connecting the National Bank to the Post Office.  During construction\, every business and every building remains open and accessible. \n  \nNewton Road in Brandon is back open to residents.  The road has not been paved yet and it is still closed to regular traffic while officials decide what to do with the Neshobe River.  It has risen over it’s banks 4 times in the last 20 years\, causing damage to the area.  Contractors have installed bigger culverts under driveways\, increasing the size from 8 inches to 18 inches.  Roadside ditches were also enlarged.  Until the river issue is resolved\, Town Manager David Atherton said\, it doesn’t make sense to pave Newton Road. \n  \nA new bill in New York will make it easier for kids to protect themselves from bug bites while at camp.  This works for overnight and day camps.  The law allows kids to apply insect repellent\, provided by the camp\, with their parents written consent.  Previously\, kids were required to provide a doctor’s note in order to carry and use it.  The camps will be required to keep a record of each permission slip. \n  \nTwo Rutland nonprofit organizations are coming together to run and house a substance treatment program a short distance from the city’s downtown.  Rutland Mental Health Services is moving its Evergreen Substance Abuse Center to unoccupied space in the administration building of BROC Community Action.  The move will provide Evergreen with more space for programming.  RMHS is also moving its adult outpatient program to the BROC building from its current location on Court Square.  The move is expected to take place sometime this fall.   \n  \nThere will  be a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Brandon-Segment 6\, Route 7 project on Monday\, July 31st.  The groundbreaking ceremony will take place in Central Park at 10 am.  State\, Town\, and Regional politicians and officials will be present to kick off this largest municipally managed project in the state’s history. \n  \nWeekly unemployment claims fell slightly again last week to a typically low summer-time level.  Claims had been running higher than usual for the summer\, but as of last week are lower than they have been for the past two months.  Claims are also lower than they were the same time last year.  Claims during the summer usually hold at a relatively low level because of vacation hiring\, until the next transition when school resumes in September. \n
