SUMMARY:Summer Solstice and Insect Blacklighting
DESCRIPTION:On the summer solstice\, Friday\, June 20th\, the board of directors at Spirit in Nature invites you to pause and welcome the change in season. Follow the lantern-lit path to the Sacred Circle\, joining friends and neighbors in the warmth of community around a fire. Pour a cup of tea and hold space for contemplation. Let’s share poetry\, words of encouragement\, stories\, song. Write down any hopes you may have for the future\, or anything you’d like to release\, and give them to the fire. \nThere will be a reading of the picture book The Raft by Jim LaMarche\, a beautiful meditation on one boy’s growing relationship with the natural world around him. And as the sun sets\, we will set up a blacklight observation area further down the path to survey the diversity of amazing insects that share this land with us. \nYoung or old\, of any faith or none at all\, all are most welcome! Consider bringing a flashlight\, and perhaps a poem or a thought to share. Also\, if you’d like to visit the insect observation area\, we ask that you don’t wear bug spray. \nWe will start gathering at 7:30pm\, and as the sun sets around 8:30pm we’ll begin monitoring insect activity. We’ll close our time with the singing bowl around the fire at 9:30pm\, but please feel free to stay with the insects as long as you like. \n

SUMMARY:Middlebury Chapter of Burlington Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Middlebury Chapter of the Burlington Writers Workshop welcomes new members. We are a respectful\, engaged group of writers working at all skill levels and in all genres—including poetry\, creative nonfiction\, memoir\, short stories\, novels\, playwriting. We meet in person\, currently in the community room of the Middlebury Police Station while the library is being renovated. We use the MFA-style of giving constructive feedback\, with two writers submitting pieces each time\, by prior arrangement. We believe meeting in person (rather than on Zoom) allows us to have a greater appreciation for the different skills and backgrounds each person brings to the meetings. Our meetings include a brief break with snacks and socializing. Hosts are Andrea Chesman and Masha Harris. Schedule: 2nd and 4th Tuesdays\, 6:30pm to 8:30pm. \nSign up at on the Burlington Writers Workshop (https://bwwvt.org/) or contact andreachesman@gmail.com. \n

SUMMARY:Microchip Clinic for Cats and Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Homeward Bound\, Addison County’s Humane Society\, is hosting a Microchip Clinic on Wednesday\, June 25\, from 3:30-4:30pm. Shelter staff ask that all dogs be on leash and cats be in carriers for this drive-thru style event. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $25 and includes the microchip implant and initial registration. \nA micro-chip is a very small electronic chip that is inserted under the skin between a pet’s shoulder blades which contains all the owner’s contact information. Most veterinary offices and shelters can scan for this chip and quickly identify the owner. The entire process takes less than two minutes and is almost painless. \nHomeward Bound’s medical programs manager\, Chelsey Berlic\, shares\, “There are still many\, many animals in Addison County without microchips who would benefit from the upcoming clinic. So far this year\, 54 stray animals have entered the shelter but only 17 were reunited with their families. We urge anyone whose dog or cat is not yet microchipped to take advantage of this low-cost option here at the shelter. It is truly the best way to safeguard a pet should they become lost.” \nHomeward Bound\, Addison County’s Humane Society | Clinic HQ \n
