Former Vermont Teddy Bear distribution site to close

SHELBURNE, Vt. (WCAX) – Around 30 layoffs are coming to a Shelburne distribution center formerly owned by Vermont Teddy Bear.

It comes after the business’ apparel divisions — largely making pajamas — were sold to a new owner. That owner says they could not come to a lease agreement for the distribution center which is on the same property as Vermont Teddy Bear.

Vermont Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington says employees received little to no notice of the layoffs. “I would say that most of these people that were affected here have the skills that are actively being sought by our various sectors, especially in manufacturing, so I don’t think their skills would go to waste. There are plenty of employers out there that are hiring right now and especially in the manufacturing sector,” Harrington said.

No Vermont Teddy Bear or Vermont flannel employees are being laid off because they’re owned by a different company now and the teddy bear factory will remain open.

The warehouse will close on June 6th.
