How to spot, avoid romance scams

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Valentine’s Day is a time for love but it turns out, some romance is not too sweet.

Romance scams are a growing concern and this time of year it’s even worse.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office says scammers will usually create a fake persona online to manipulate people’s feelings to steal money or get personal information.

Scams can start on social media, dating apps, or text messages. Then they try and get close to you.

But there are some red flags to keep an eye out for, like someone asking for money in urgent made-up situations, or someone who won’t meet in person.

They say the best way to stay safe is not answering at all, limiting how much personal information you have on social media, and not sending money to someone you haven’t met in person.

If you have been scammed tell local authorities and report it at your state Attorney General’s office.
