A large, messy storm will impact our region, along with potentially damaging wind.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A messy, significant storm will impact our region from late this afternoon right into early Monday morning. The bulk of the storm will be through the day Sunday.

Most of today will actually be tranquil with thickening clouds, then snow will start to overspread the region late afternoon into early evening. The snow will continue overnight into Sunday morning, with 2 to 5 inches likely by then.

Heading into late Sunday morning, the snow is expected to mix with sleet, especially in Vermont and New Hampshire, and especially in southern parts of the region. For the afternoon, that’s when some freezing rain may mix in, especially in southern sections. This all will taper to snow showers Sunday night, with scattered snow showers continuing Monday. One change is that potentially damaging wind is possible in Rutland County during the day, with gusts from the east to 60 mph. The western slopes of the Green Mountains may have gusts to 55 mph. As the storm moves out, the wind may gust from the west to 40 mph overnight, so power outages are possible with the snow/mix clinging to the trees. Make sure to have flashlights and water handy. Keep an eye on power outages across the state here>>

Accumulation is expected to be 6 to 12 inches for northern portions of New York, and the Green Mountains of Vermont. The valleys and southern areas will have closer to 4 to 8 inches, due to more sleet and freezing rain mixing in. Southern areas may also have up to a quarter inch of ice. Use extreme caution if you must travel tonight into Monday morning, and make sure to allow room for the road crew to do their jobs.

Quiet and cold weather is on the way into the middle of the week, with highs mainly in the teens and lows a few degrees above and below zero. Models were hinting at another storm system on Thursday, but that’s now expected to stay east in the Atlantic. Some snow showers are expected on Friday, but highs will be warmer, getting into the mid to upper 20s.
