People rally in St. Johnsbury for release of detained asylum seeker

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – Around 50 people rallied Saturday for the release of a Vermont asylum seeker.

According to the Northeast Kingdom Asylum Seekers Assistance Network, ICE agents detained 35 year old Nafiou Lamidi during a routine check in St. Albans earlier this month.

He has now been incarcerated for 13 days, and has still not been given a reason for his confinement.

People rallied for his release at the United Community Church in St. Johnsbury, calling for due process.

“Immigrants bring beautiful diversity to the United States Of America. Nafiou has been here for five months from Africa. As soon as we get him out of jail, St. Johnsbury is going to be an even better place,” Karyn Jilk of Northeast Kingdom Asylum Seekers Assistance Network said.

Lamidi is now in a federal correctional institution in Berlin, New Hampshire.
