COLEBROOK, N.H. (WCAX) – A gunman went on a rampage in northern New Hampshire on this day in history.
On August 19, 1997, Carl Drega went into downtown Colebrook, where he shot and killed two state troopers, a local judge, and a newspaper editor.
After returning to his house and setting it on fire, Drega fled to Vermont.
A massive manhunt formed.
Officers tracked Drega up a logging road, where he set up an ambush.
Drega wounded three more officers before he was finally shot and killed.
Carl Drega had a long history of conflict with local government over property rights and other issues, but no one knows for sure what set him off that day – only that he meant to kill.
