Vt. Supreme Court upholds Burlington man’s murder conviction

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The state’s highest court has upheld the conviction of a Burlington man who killed his wife with a meat cleaver and attempted to kill his mother-in-law back in 2017.

Aita Gurung’s attorneys appealed to the state Supreme Court, saying he shouldn’t have been prosecuted again after charges were dropped once before, he didn’t have adequate interpretation and the jury wasn’t allowed to do its job correctly.

But the high court disagreed, so Gurung’s conviction stands.

He was sentenced in 2023 to serve 35 years to life for the first-degree murder of his wife, Yogeswari Khadka, and 20 years to life for the attempted murder of his mother-in-law, Talasa Rimal.
