Federal authorities expand task force to combat human smuggling

TAMPA, Fla. (WCAX) – The Trump administration is urging would-be migrants not to risk their safety by being smuggled into the United States.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi was joined Thursday by Vermont’s acting U.S. attorney, touting arrests in human smuggling cases. Bondi says since President Trump took office, more than 50 people have been charged for smuggling migrants. And she says they’re now expanding their enforcement efforts on the northern border, which includes our region.

“For those who are considering paying to be smuggled into the U.S., it is not safe for you or your families,” Bondi said.

“They aid and abet those seeking to enter the country illegally. Second, they exploit people who are desperate and misguided enough to try to enter the country illegally,” said Acting U.S. Attorney for Vermont Michael P. Drescher.

It comes as a Michigan woman was charged this week with coordinating with Canadian conspirators to smuggle people across the border in Vermont.
