Vermonters get their last-minute lottery tickets for the second-largest Powerball jackpot in history

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – With the Powerball drawing Saturday night, many are getting their last-minute tickets with hopes to win the whopping jackpot of $1.8 billion.

“Two tickets, one for me, one for the Mrs…. I asked the man upstairs what I got to do to win the lottery, and he said buy a ticket,” said David Hunter of Burlington.

“I figured I couldn’t win if I didn’t play at all. It’s a lot of money,” said Kaleb Hayes of Burlington.

This is the second-largest jackpot in Powerball history, following 2022’s $2 billion prize.

If you choose to take the lump sum cash prize, it would be about 628 million dollars after taxes. With that amount of money, the possibilities are endless.

“I would buy a really big piece of land… feed some people, give them water, I don’t know, help some charities, give money to veterans, save some dogs,” said Hayes.

“10% donate, which would be an easy thing to do, and then buy down friends and family’s debt… start a business that helps people get better education…[make sure] lower income families have better access to education… buy a small country, I don’t know,” said Tyler Mackelvey of Burlington.

“First thing I do, I would buy the Intervale and put up a dome where we could host concerts and sporting events… I might buy a nice boat… probably take out a lot of ads on Channel 3,” said Hunter.

Some are feeling lucky. “I’m feeling so lucky for sure,” said Hayes.

And others… Maybe not so much. “I don’t feel lucky, but I think if I keep saying that, then maybe the opposite would happen… I’d probably have a heart attack, and then I’d call my attorney,” said Mackelvey.
