MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont’s secretary of state says she has no plans to share state voting data with the feds.
President Donald Trump last month said he wants to do away with electronic voting and mail-in ballots, claiming they are ripe for fraud.
Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas says turning over that data violates Vermont law. “I think most Americans, and certainly most Vermonters, would prefer to have their personally identifiable information kept secure, and that’s probably why this was enacted into law in Vermont to say that we would not share this information with the federal government or any foreign entity,” she said.
Copeland Hanzas says she and the state attorney general are working with other states to better understand the rationale of the federal request.
She says she’s also confident in Vermont’s election integrity and the clerks statewide working to uphold it.
