BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Eastern Equine Encephalitis, also known as triple-e, has now been detected by Vermont health officials in three counties and two towns.
The Vermont Health Department on Friday said the potentially deadly mosquito-transmitted virus has been detected for the first time this year in Franklin, Addison, and Orleans counties. Mosquitoes from Swanton and Vergennes have tested positive, and a horse in Brownington is also suspected to have had the virus.
The virus caused serious illness in two people in the state last year, one of whom died.
There have not been any human cases of triple-e reported this year. Symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash.
The best way to protect yourself and your family is to prevent mosquito bites.
