Vt. may request federal drought declaration

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont farms are still battling this fall’s drought, but they may soon see some relief. Despite this week’s soaking storms, many Vermont counties and farms remain in an extreme drought. Some are trucking in water for livestock while other farms have seen crop loss.

The state is calculating the loss, but will likely soon request a federal drought declaration from the federal government. The declaration could help some farms recover from this year’s dry conditions.

“It could be emergency loans for crop losses it could be programs that help with hauling water drilling wells, etc. But that’s a conversation that farmers should have with their local office of FSA.” said Anson Tebbetts, the Secretary of Agriculture.

The Agency of Agriculture is urging farmers to keep documenting losses and incurred expenses if and when the federal government approves the request.
