Student journalism instructors gather for UVM conference

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Preparing the next generation of journalists is the aim of a three-day conference underway at the University of Vermont.

UVM’s Center for Community News hosted the National Conference for Student Reporting Programs.

Upwards of 150 journalism program staff from higher education institutions across the country are taking part in programs to discuss teaching methods, collaboration, and news trends.

Richard Watts, who leads the UVM program, says it’s an opportunity to learn from one another. “There’s all sorts of different ways it’s done, always with the bottom line of giving students these real experiences and helping local news,” he said

The first-of-its-kind conference concludes Saturday.
