This Day in History: October 4, 1998

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A milestone birthday party involving a former governor and a retired supreme court justice happened on this day in history.

On October 4, 1998, well-wishers congratulated F. Ray Keyser on recently turning 100 years old. His son, F. Ray Keyser, Jr., was there to celebrate with him.

The younger Keyser was elected governor in 1960, and his father, a superior court judge at the time, administered the oath of office. Keyser Jr. served only one term as governor, but the man who defeated him, Phil Hoff, later appointed Keyser Sr. to the Vermont Supreme Court, where he served for 11 years.

F. Ray Keyser Sr. died in 2001 at the age of 102.
