Burlington students honor Ruby Bridges with community walk

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Hunt Middle School students on Friday walked through the New North End to honor Ruby Bridges, the first Black child to attend an all-white school in Louisiana in 1960.

The students used the walk as their own form of activism against racism and bullying to commemorate Bridges’ legacy.

Seventh-grader Melodie Meyer said her favorite part was the community response. “People came out of their houses cheering,” she said. “It really showed that we were making a movement and we were standing together as a community. And it showed that we were making a difference, and I just felt really proud of Hunt and myself and my community.”

This is the second year students have taken part in the walk. The event culminated with a school assembly featuring poetry and speeches.
