MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – A devastating fire destroyed multiple buildings in downtown Middlebury on this day in history.
The blaze wiped out several structures, including the Battell Block. A photo from the aftermath shows the extent of the destruction, with the Battell Block missing from the foreground where it once stood.
Following the fire, the block was rebuilt over the next few years. The reconstructed building remains a cornerstone of Middlebury’s downtown today.
