VERNON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont’s first and only nuclear plant opened on this day in history.
Vermont Yankee came on line November 30, 1972, in the town of Vernon. The project overcame strong opposition from environmental activists, who worried about the long-term safety of the plant.
Yankee went on to supply about a third of Vermont’s energy needs. It operated for 42 years before closing in 2014.
