Bird flu detected in Orleans County backyard flock

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont agriculture officials say they have detected bird flu in a backyard poultry flock in Orleans County this week.

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture says the flock of about 300 birds suffered its first of multiple deaths last Saturday and contacted agency officials.

Officials say samples taken on Monday are currently being analyzed at a national lab in Iowa. They say the flock has been culled and workers are also being monitored by the Vermont Department of Health.

Officials say it’s the sixth instance of bird flu in a domestic flock in Vermont since the spring of 2022.

Bird owners are urged to review their biosecurity and measures and to report sick birds at 802-828-2421 or through USDA’s toll-free number at 1-866-536-7593 as soon as possible.
