BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. (WCAX) – A stubborn bridge finally fell on this date in history.
Thousands gathered in Bellows Falls on December 5, 1982, to watch the demolition of the old arch bridge.
The 75-year-old steel structure had become so worn out that it was deemed unsafe even for pedestrians to cross.
Channel 3’s Tim Lewis picked up the story.
“When the early crowds began to gather on Sunday, everyone was confident that the bridge would go down, but it didn’t,” reported Lewis.
After five tries with explosives, the demolition crew had to use cutting torches before the old bridge finally gave way.
