Gas prices hit nearly five-year low, but Vermont still among most expensive

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The new year is off to a cheaper start at the pump, with the national average gas price reaching its lowest point in nearly five years.

According to AAA, the national average is sitting at $2.81 per gallon. The last time it was that low was March 2021.

But Vermont is still pricier, with an average of $3.02, the ninth most expensive of all the states. New York is the 10th most expensive with an average of $3.01. New Hampshire is sitting at $2.86.

Prices in the region are usually higher than the national average because gas has to be shipped in and less competition.

With people generally driving less in the winter and staying home after the holidays, demand is down, but supply is up. Because of this, the coalition of oil-exporting countries said it’s not planning any production hikes in the first quarter of this year.

“It’s great for motorists to save some money out there. The future looks good. We will probably see gas prices hopefully continue to at least remain steady, if not decrease, which is just great news for everyone,” said Dan Goodman of AAA Northern New England.

While Vermont may have some of the most expensive gas prices out of all the states, it is actually one of the cheapest states to charge EVs. According to AAA, the national average at public charging stations is 38 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity. In Vermont, it’s an average of 31 cents, the sixth cheapest in the country. In New Hampshire, it’s 43 cents, making it the fifth most expensive place to charge an EV at a public charging station.
