BOLTON, Vt. (WCAX) – It’s been an early season for skiing and riding in Vermont and the mountains are busy. Before you get out there, it’s important to learn, or brush up on, essential ski safety rules.
Resorts across the country, and our region, operate based on the National Ski Area Association’s responsibility code.
Before you hit the slopes, the association says to make sure you’re confident using the lift.
Plus, they say to stay sober on your ride up and journey down the mountain. That’ll help you stay in control and be prepared to stop to avoid people or objects.
Remember that people below you have the right of way, but pay attention to anyone above you.
Cecilia Manno, a ski patroller at Bolton, adds that there’s safety in numbers. “Number one, we should always be skiing with other people, whether that’s just one buddy or a whole group of friends. Making a plan and making sure you all meet up at the bottom as you agreed to so that no one gets left behind,” Manno said.
The association urges you to prevent any runaway equipment and always follow signs and trail closures.
Finally, if you’re involved in a collision or accident, share your contact info with those involved and a ski area employee. It’s a good idea to save the ski patrol’s number in your phone for fast help if you’re in trouble.
