Bethlehem landfill operator to pay $1.9M settlement with state

CONCORD, N.H., Vt. (WCAX) – The operator of the Bethlehem landfill will pay the state of New Hampshire $1.9 million in a settlement over leachate collection violations.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office says the civil penalty was assessed against North Country Environmental Services, a subsidiary of Vermont-based Casella Waste Systems.

The violations included placing waste beyond permitted limits, failing to maintain leachate collection systems resulting in on-site discharges, and improperly drilling gas monitoring wells.

The company three years ago settled a federal lawsuit with two environmental groups over allegations of leaking toxic chemicals into the Ammonoosuc River, something the company denied.
