Welch meets with Greenland leaders amid Trump acquisition threats

WASHINGTON (WCAX) – As President Trump’s threats over Greenland continue, Vermont Senator Peter Welch visited Danish and Greenlandic lawmakers overseas this past weekend.

Welch says locals there see the U.S. as an ally, but he says they’re stunned to see Trump’s threats, pointing out that the U.S.’s popularity is plummeting among Greenland residents.

Welch calls what the president is doing overreach. “The United States does not need Greenland. It has no authority to get it. It would be an attack on our NATO allies. It would literally be an act of war, what the president is talking about,” Welch said.

Trump insists his push to acquire Greenland is driven by national security concerns.

Senator Welch says he will work with colleagues to introduce a resolution to prevent the president from using tariffs on European NATO allies to achieve his goal of taking over Greenland.
