How extreme cold impacts Vermont maple tapping

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Experts say the subzero temperatures will not impact syrup quality, and some maple producers are even getting in some early-season tapping already.

However, UVM Maple Specialist Mark Isselhardt says most producers are likely taking this weekend off to protect themselves and the trees.

“There’s also potential for damage if you drive a spout into a frozen stem at these cold temperatures. You can damage the sensitive cambium layer underneath the bark, so they’re not gonna do that,” said Isselhardt.

He says larger operations are more likely to be tapping now. This weekend, it’s a good time to stay warm and ready other parts of your operation for the upcoming season.

“The season will be here pretty soon, so it’s a good time to check equipment, it’s a good time to make sure all your gear is ready to go, because when it does come, that’s really what determines if it’s a season of note, if it’s a good year or an off year. It’s that specific weather pattern during sugaring season,” said Isselhardt.
