Vermont responds to dangerous cold with extended police patrols, safety tips

WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont State Police will implement “freeze patrols” amid dangerously cold weather expected to grip the region this weekend, ensuring continuous law enforcement coverage during the extreme conditions.

The extended police coverage means night shift troopers will stay on duty beyond their normal 2 a.m. end of shift, while day shift troopers will come in early to ensure there is no gap in police coverage.

The extended patrols begin Friday night and will continue through at least Sunday.

The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles Enforcement and Safety Division will also provide extra police coverage during the overnight hours this weekend.

COLD WEATHER SAFETY TIPS

Vermont Emergency Management is urging residents to take precautions if they must venture outside during the extreme cold. Here are the key safety recommendations:

Dress Appropriately

  • Layer up: Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing
  • Outer layers: Should be water repellent
  • Essential gear: Hat, mittens, scarf and sturdy waterproof boots

Know the Dangers

  • Frostbite: Any exposed skin can quickly develop frostbite, causing skin to go pale and feel numb
  • Hypothermia: In extreme cases, hypothermia is a possibility
  • Seek help: Get immediate medical care if you start to feel unwell

Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors and check on vulnerable neighbors during the cold snap.

HOME SAFETY TIPS

As the cold hits, Vermont Emergency Management says to make sure your home is ready to weather it.

  • Ensure you have enough fuel to heat your home.
  • Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors ahead of time, as well as your heat sources’ vents.
  • If you lose heat, you can seal off unused rooms by stuffing towels in the cracks under the doors.
  • At night, cover up the windows with blankets or sheets.
  • Make sure you eat enough to provide your own body with fuel.
  • Check in on your neighbors to make sure they’re OK, especially the elderly and disabled.
