MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Gov. Phil Scott says Vermonters are now safer thanks to his new Accountability Court.
The effort by the governor, Burlington’s mayor, law enforcement, a Supreme Court justice and more is aimed at clearing court backlogs.
Gov. Scott spoke with our Darren Perron about the effort and how he says it’s improving public safety.
“I mean, I think you just walk through Burlington. You can see the difference. We have so many people reaching out and saying they’ve seen an incredible improvement in downtown Burlington. Business owners in particular, I’ve met with all of them while we were formulating this idea. And they were, some of them, ready to move out of downtown Burlington. But they’ve been pleased with the reaction. People are coming back in. And it’s not to say that this can’t happen again. We have to nurture this and make sure that we’re keeping up and holding people accountable for the crimes they commit on the local level,” said Scott, R-Vermont.
The governor said he hopes to expand the effort statewide.
