MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Fifty years of temperance in Vermont came to an end on this day in history.
Making, selling, and drinking alcohol were prohibited in Vermont starting in 1853.
The ban came to an end with a vote of the legislature on February 3, 1903.
After that, individual towns could still decide whether to remain dry.
Booze was again banned from 1920 to 1933 during the nationwide prohibition era.
