This Day in History: First national snow “surfing” championship

POMFRET, Vt. (WCAX) – On February 6, 1982, the first national snow “surfing” championship was held at Suicide Six in Pomfret.

The sport was in its infancy, and riders were not welcome at many ski areas at the time.

Among the competitors that day were Jake Burton Carpenter, the man behind Burton snowboards, the top brand in the world.
