Gov. Phil Scott says he would not have attended White House Governor’s visit regardless of cancellation

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – An annual meeting of U.S. governors at the White House has been cancelled.

It comes after President Trump reportedly only planned to invite Republican governors to the event.

Vermont’s Republican Governor Phil Scott said even before it was cancelled that he would not attend if democratic governors were left out.

He says he contacted the National Governors’ Association about the meeting and his intentions if Democrats were excluded.

“The NGA is important. This bipartisanship is important. We need to bring our country back together. and there’s no better area to do that than, I think, the National Governors Association’s long-standing tradition of going to the White House,” said Gov. Scott.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the president’s decision not to invite democratic governors, saying in part that he can invite whomever he wants to the White House.
