This Day in History: Vermont National Guard elects first female commander

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – In a vote of the legislature on February 20, 1997, Air Guard Colonel Martha Rainville was elected Vermont adjutant general – the civilian post overseeing Vermont’s army and air guard units.

She would hold the post until her retirement in 2006.

Also on this day in history, more Olympic success in our region. Jimmy Shea of Lake Placid won the gold medal in the skeleton at the Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Shea was a third-generation Olympian.

His dad, James, was a cross-country skier in the 1964 games, and his grandfather jack won two golds in speed skating in the 1932 Olympics.
