WASHINGTON (WCAX) – Vermont Senator Peter Welch is renewing calls for a ceasefire in the Middle East following Iran’s attack on Israel over the weekend.
Welch says he’s concerned about tensions rising further after Iran and Iranian-backed groups launched hundreds of drones and missiles toward Israel. Israel claims most were intercepted. The attack follows Israel’s bombing of the Iranian consulate in Syria two weeks before.
Welch says he is grateful there was no loss of life, but continues to push for a ceasefire. “We’re seeing a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. The enormous risk and actual escalation that’s occurring and it would be catastrophic for every month if this escalates more. So, my hope is that there’ll be renewed pressure for a ceasefire so that we can focus on getting the hostages home and also getting the humanitarian aid in,” Welch said
Israel’s military chief has vowed they will respond to Iran’s attack.
