Drivers warned to be cautious with kids going back to school

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Whether you’re dropping your kid off or driving alongside school buses, we have some tips to keep in mind.

The name of the game is driving with extra awareness and caution.

One key reminder: it’s illegal to pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights from any direction. If you see a bus flash yellow lights, prepare to stop.

You should also pay attention to school zones marked by signs and flashing lights.

They’re typically between 15 and 25 miles per hour, enforced during school hours.

One Burlington police officer cautions that back-to-school traffic can put kids in danger if you’re not careful.

“I think there’s a lot of just anxiety with people going back to school, and people rushing into work, and where they’re going. So, yes, there’s a little bit more heightened activity around the start of school,” said Officer Jonathan Young. “I think some of the biggest fears that we have, as well as the parents, are just kids in the roadway, people are not slowing down, especially in school zones. Slowing down, paying attention to crosswalks.”

It’s also important to keep an eye out for kids who are walking or biking to school. Give them space and go slow.

Ignoring these rules will cost you. You’ll be fined $249 and five points on your license for passing a school bus.

Fines are doubled for speeding in school zones, and you’ll get points.
