Governor recommends state avoid purchasing Hyde Park dam

HYDE PARK, Vt. (WCAX) – Gov. Phil Scott says the state of Vermont should not buy the Green River Reservoir Dam.

For years, Morrisville Water and Light has raised concerns about the cost of maintenance, raising questions about who should own the dam, and what it means for the pristine Green River Reservoir behind it.

A new report from the state this week shows the dam is in good shape and that it has a big economic impact on the community.

The report recommended the state assume ownership of the dam.

But the governor says that with about $8 million in upfront plus operating costs, that would be expensive, too.

“We need to work with all of the parties involved in order to see if they can find a solution that suits everyone. If everyone gives a little bit, I think we could get it done. But time will tell,” said Scott, R-Vermont.

Removing the dam and draining the Green River Reservoir would cost $16 million, something Scott says should not be on the table.
