This Day in History: September 26, 1954 and 1981

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – On this day in history, we mark the arrival of television in Vermont on September 26, 1954.

“1, 2, 3, 4 now: WMVT telecasting on Channel 3 from the top of Vermont begins its first day of programming in service to the people of Vermont, our neighbors in New York state and New Hampshire, and our friends in Canada. It will be our principal aim to provide the finest programming for your entertainment and information.”

WMVT was soon changed to WCAX, and Friday marks our 71st birthday of providing news and entertainment across our region.

Speaking of entertainment, this was a big day in history in 1981, when Burlington’s Flynn Theatre reopened as a performing arts center.

Since opening as a vaudeville house in 1930, the Flynn had mainly served as a movie theatre, but a local acting group saw an opportunity to return the Flynn to its stage roots, offering a wide range of performing arts.
