ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – Hundreds of people gathered on new blacktop in St. Johnsbury on October 17, 1978, to celebrate the completion of Interstate 91’s final section in Vermont.
The new highway, stretching from New Haven, Connecticut, to Derby Line, provided a vital link, connecting the Northeast Kingdom to the interstate system.
“This highway — the major highways of Vermont — are in fact arteries which take the blood of Vermont and circulate it through the body of the state,” said Vermont Governor Richard Snelling.
The final sections of Interstates 89 and 93 opened about four years later.
