First Alert Weather Day: Messy mix this weekend

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – We’retracking some messy weather on the way this weekend. Ahead of rain, freezing rain, andsnow,we have issued a First Alert Weather Day for Sunday. Most of the wintry weather and potential impacts are expected on Sunday.

Timing:

Rain and freezing rain will begin moving into northern New York after sunset on Saturday, reaching the Vermont border around 8pm. The messy precipitation will continue to move through our region overnight into Sunday. Through Sunday morning we’ll see rain transitioning over to snow. The snow flurries will likely linger into Monday before tapering off.

Temperatures will also be dropping through Sunday. The warmest part of the day will be the first thing in the morning, then we’ll see temperatures dropping through the 30s. Highs will stay in the 30s for Monday, mid-30s in the valleys, but low 30s for most places.

Ice & Snow Accumulations:

By the time we wake up Sunday morning, some of us will have a glaze to a tenth of an inch of ice. The most likely places to see some light icing are the Adirondacks, the Green Mountains, and points east into north central Vermont and northeastern Vermont.

The majority of the snow accumulation will be in the northern mountains. The summits could see around a foot of new snow with the mid-slopes seeing between 3-6″. The Northeast Kingdom will see a widespread 1-3″ with some localized higher elevations seeing up to 6″. The valleys and southern Vermont will see much lower snowfall totals of only a coating to an inch or two.

Impacts:

Untreated roadways, driveways, sidewalks, walkways, and outdoor stairs could all be icy Sunday morning. Make sure you have salt or sand ahead of the freezing rain to keep yourself from sliding around!

Travel through the mountains beginning Sunday afternoon will become hazardous. Snow will be coating the roads making for slick travel. And the snowfall will likely be moderate to heavy at times, greatly reducing visibility.

As temperatures drop on Sunday, surfaces could freeze and become slippery. This means any roads that are still wet from the rain or snow could become icy by Sunday afternoon even in the valleys.
