RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) – The man accused of causing a crash that killed a Rutland police officer has been denied bail.
Police say in July 2023, Officer Jessica Ebbighausen was killed when Tate Rheaume crashed into her police cruiser during a pursuit.
Rheaume pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including aggravated murder, Vermont’s most serious penalty.
Just a few weeks ago, an internal report from Rutland Police surfaced where an investigator shared the opinion that the officers involved in the crash did not follow departmental policies.
Following the release of that report, Rheaume’s lawyer asked that he be released while his case plays out.
Judge Cortland Corsones denied the request, saying the report and other factors have no bearing on the original decision to hold Rheaume without bail.
