Burlington City Council to consider mayor’s tax fairness proposal

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington’s mayor wants a non-binding advisory question on tax fairness on the Town Meeting Day ballot.

Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak has said her proposal would lower taxes for lower-valued homes and raise taxes for higher-valued homes and commercial properties by removing $30,000 from the value of primary homes.

But City Council President Ben Traverse, D-Ward 5, is concerned about shifting the burden to renters and businesses.

“I think it’s an idea that’s difficult to explain to voters in a short ballot question. I’d rather us focus on steps we can actually take now to address affordability and property tax concerns rather than advisory questions that don’t have a binding effect,” Traverse said.

The City Council will vote on whether to add the question on the Town Meeting Day ballot at their next meeting on January 20.
