Sanders bill would ban presidents from naming buildings after themselves

WASHINGTON (WCAX) – Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders wants to ban sitting presidents from naming buildings after themselves.

It comes after President Trump’s handpicked board voted to add his name to the Kennedy Center. The State Department also announced last month that it would rename the U.S. Institute of Peace after Trump.

Sanders and two other senators introduced a bill to prevent that from happening again. It would also restore the original names on the Kennedy Center and the Institute of Peace.

“For Trump to put his name on federal buildings is arrogant, and it is illegal. We must put an end to this narcissism, and that’s what this bill does,” Sanders said in a statement.

According to Democratic lawmakers, changing the name of a federal building requires legislative action.
