Vermont marks one year since Border Patrol agent’s shooting death

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont is marking the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David “Chris” Maland.

The shooting happened during a traffic stop on January 20, 2025, near the U.S.-Canadian border in Coventry.

The driver of the stopped car, Teresa Youngblut, is accused of opening fire on Maland and other agents.

In a statement, Customs and Border Protection officials said Maland’s loss is deeply felt and his fellow agents continue to mourn him one year later.

“His courage and dedication embody the highest traditions of the U.S. Border Patrol and serve as a lasting reminder of the risks our agents face each day in the line of duty,” officials said.

Authorities say Youngblut belongs to a group called the Zizians, who are linked to six deaths in three states. She faces the death penalty.
