Governor Scott addresses Vermont’s demographic conundrum

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont posted the largest population decline in the country last year, losing more than 1,800 residents, a trend the governor’s been fighting for years that’s worrisome for the economy.

The state struggles with population loss as well as limited economic diversification and slow job growth, according to a recent report. It’s one of just three states that experienced net population loss between 2023 and 2024.

In an exclusive one-on-one interview with Darren Perron, Governor Phil Scott addressed what went wrong with the state’s population trends and how he hopes to fix it.

You can see Darren’s full conversation with the governor on “You Can Quote Me,” streaming on Friday at 7 p.m. and airing on Channel 3 Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
