Burlington officials say funding still needed to reconnect Bank, Cherry streets

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Burlington city officials say certain phases of the Great Streets project still need funding after hitting a $16 million snag.

Efforts have been in the works for years to reconnect Bank and Cherry streets through alleyways of Pine and St. Paul.

Right now, the project will be split into two parts. The first will focus on reconnection. The second will be road repairs.

After a tough year for business in 2025, leaders say they are adapting to concerns from local business owners.

“We have learned a lot of lessons from our project on Main Street. So, we’ve been meeting with folks from the BBA and taking input from business and property owners as we’ve met with them,” said Julia Ursaki, Burlington Public Works project manager.

Officials will aim for two construction seasons, spring 2027 and 2028. The goal is to complete the project in early 2029.
