NORTH HERO, Vt. (WCAX) – The YMCA’s Camp Abnaki in North Hero is usually a summer spot, but one day in the winter they open up their grounds for cold-weather fun.
About 60 people came out to the camp for a variety of winter activities.
Camp Abnaki staff cleaned off a portion of the lake to make an ice rink and groomed cross-country ski trails. Families also enjoyed s’mores by the fire.
Camp staff say they haven’t done this the last few years but are happy to be back this year.
“Camp is a special place for a lot of people and you only get to see it in the summer, so to see a place that means so much to you in the wintertime is fun for a lot of folks,” said Jon Kuypers, senior director. “It’s a great natural resource. We have acres of trails that we’ve groomed, beautiful access to the lake, so it’s a chance to be in a place that looks a little different than others and enjoy the outdoors.”
Camp Abnaki is an all-boys camp, and summer 2026 registration is now open.
