This Day in History: Vermont becomes 14th state

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – On February 18, 1791, the US House and Senate admitted Vermont as the 14th state, and the first new state since winning independence from Britain.

“It is hereby enacted and declared, that on the fourth day of March, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-one … “The state of Vermont,” shall be received and admitted into this union, as a new and entire member of the United States of America,” reads the law.
