WASHINGTON (WCAX) – Vermont Sen. Peter Welch is celebrating a major Supreme Court decision that struck down President Trump’s sweeping tariffs.
In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump violated federal law when he imposed far-reaching global tariffs under federal emergency power laws.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion that Trump needs authorization from Congress to exercise those tariffs.
The decision is a significant loss for the president on an issue crucial to his economic agenda.
Despite the ruling, administration officials say they expect to keep the tariff framework in place under other authorities.
Sen. Welch, D-Vermont, celebrated the news, saying in part, “I welcome this definitive ruling by the Supreme Court, which will provide relief to America’s Main Streets and makes it clear that Congress—and Congress alone—holds the constitutional authority to regulate tariffs.”
